OUR STORY
Where It all Began
My story starts with my mum, who grew up in Singapore, surrounded by the incredible mix of cultures and flavours that make Singaporean food so special. My grandparents ran their own restaurant there, and growing up around that world — the kitchen, the people, the food — became part of who I am.
My dad brought his own rich heritage into the mix before the family eventually made Australia home. Between the two of them, I grew up with a beautiful blend of Singaporean and Malaysian influences — flavours that have stayed with me ever since.
Somewhere along the way, my love for food became something I wanted to share.
The Idea
For years, I'd been making a chilli oil at home — nothing fancy, just something that came naturally, inspired by the flavours I grew up with. I never imagined it would become a business.
Until one day my husband tried it and said, "Babe, why don't we sell this?"
He's been a chef for almost 30 years, so when he told me he believed in what I'd made, it meant everything. His belief gave me the courage to take the first step.
What is "shiok"
It was my husband who suggested the name Shiok King — a name chosen to honour our family, our heritage, and the food that has shaped our lives.
"Shiok" is Singaporean slang for something that brings genuine, can't-get-enough-of-it enjoyment.
It felt like exactly the right word.
What we're about
This chilli oil is a little piece of home — a nod to my mum, my grandparents, the restaurant they built, and all the memories of growing up around food.
Every batch is made with care, using the flavours that take me straight back to those days.
Shiok King isn't trying to be something it's not. It's not overly fancy, it's not chasing "hottest chilli oil" bragging rights, and it's not covered in gimmicks. It's just a good, honest, classic chilli oil — a little crunchy, a little fiery, packed with flavour, the kind you reach for again and again.
Drizzle it over noodles. Spoon it onto rice. Dip your dumplings in it. Add it to whatever you're eating — or, if you're anything like me, put it on almost everything.
More Than a Chilli Oil
For me, Shiok King is about taking something that's been part of my family for generations and giving it a new chapter — remembering where we came from, celebrating the food that brought us together, and sharing a little piece of that story with you. And it's about doing it together with the person who gave me the courage to believe a little jar of chilli oil could become something more.
